Lil’ Baby Names

I designed and produced this baby naming app with some fellow co-workers with dreams of early retirement. Of course that didn’t happen, but it was fun to contribute to the early days of the App Store.

Available on iTunes and Google Play.

Problem

My co-worker had a dilemna. He was searching for an app to help him find a name for his newborn son that contained the names Don and Gary (grandparents of the baby). He couldn’t find it, so he wrote his own. I helped him make it more user-friendly.
p.s. His boy is now named Graydon.

Solution

We gathered every registered baby name from 1880 until now. Those names were categorized by sex. For gender neutral names, we simply took names that appeared as both boy and girl. We asked the user some basic questions and tailored those answers into simple regular expression queries. Once you have a list, it is easy to sort by popularity, alphabetically, or length.
